Okuno-Auromex offers various electroless nickel and pretreatment technologies to deposit nickel-phosphorus, lead-free nickel-phosphorus, nickel-boron, and composites electroless nickel deposits.


Electroless Nickel deposition is a process that typically uses chemical reduction with either phosphorus or boron reducing agents to deposit NiPx and NiBx alloys of varying composition and properties. The substrates are either “catalyzed” dielectric materials (e.g. plastics, resins etc.) or catalytic metals specifically pretreated for deposition. The absence of an externally applied current and its associated current density distribution implies that complex geometries can be plated with excellent thickness uniformity. Electroless Nickel alloys are typically hard and corrosion resistant and are utilized to enhance the appearance, corrosion and wear resistance of “items” used in chemically and mechanically harsh environments.

Our electroless nickel processes can be plated on a variety of substrates, such as iron, steel, brass, copper, stainless steel, aluminum and plastics. The products are environmental friendly encompassing features such as lead-free and heavy metal-free, and comply with EU directives such as RoHS, ELV and WEEE.

Lead-Free Nickel-Phosphorus Type Electroless Nickel

Okuno-Auromex provides lead-free nickel phosphorus electroless nickel for low (1-5% P), medium (6-9% P) and high (>10% P) phosphorous deposits. The processes are not stabilized with lead (Pb) additives and thus meet RoHS and other environmental legislation. The deposits are bright, relatively hard and provide chemical and corrosion resistance commensurate with the percentage phosphorous in the deposit.

Okuno-Auromex high phosphorus electroless nickel products provide deposits with outstanding wear resistance and high corrosion resistance even in the most aggressive applications such as components for fuel injection, drive shafts in automotive systems, rotors and stator in aerospace, and for pump and tubular components used in the oil and gas industry. Our high phosphorous electroless nickel plated on aluminum substrates is widely accepted in electronics components, such as heat sinks or data storage parts for computers. These technologies deliver a superior smoothness and brightness while providing high strength, low density and good corrosion resistance.
Okuno-Auromex medium phosphorous electroless nickel processes provide a bright finish and good corrosion resistance, and are utilized for applications requiring surface lubricity, relatively high hardness, wear resistance and anti-galling properties. Typical applications are: pinion shafts, cast iron slip yokes and pistons, computer printer rollers, and machine components for plastic molding dies among others.
Okuno-Auromex low phosphorus electroless nickel processes offer cost effective processes and provide relatively high levels of both hardness and good solderability. With the advantage of a uniform thickness inside complex configurations as well as outside, this creates compressive stress which decreases fatigue failure on steel alloys. The grinding after plating is eliminated. It is, therefore, often used for warm gears and similar applications.

Nickel-Boron Type Electroless Nickel

Okuno-Auromex’s nickel-boron electroless nickel contains relatively lower amounts of boron (less than 1%) for improved solderability and higher conductivity, and exhibit significant hardness without heat treatment. Application in electronics include capacitors, chip resisters, transistors, IC packages. They are also utilized in mechanical applications such as machined parts, condenser parts, rollers and bearing.
As with all of Okuno-Auromexelectroless nickel products, they are lead-free product and meet all environmental regulatory specifications.

TOP Chem alloy 66-LF Lead-free nickel-boron brightener. Provide
uniform alloys film that offers heat resistance more than 1300 Celsius and
high hardness at 800 HV. Boron content is below 1%.


Composites Electroless Nickel

Electroless nickel offers high levels of hardness, wear resistance and lubricity; however, these characteristics can be enhanced by the co-deposition of non-metallic particles. Ceramic particles for example, silicon carbide increase deposit hardness, while silicon nitride or boron nitride improve self-lubricating properties, and the co-deposition of PTFE (Teflon) particles provides a lubricious surface which enhances abrasion resistance and sliding wear.
Electroless Nickel Composites have been used successfully to improve the performance of automotive pistons, cylinder bores and car rotating parts. In the tool and die industry, they have found applications in molds and die components. In the electronics sector, electroless nickel composites are utilized in applications such as camera shutter parts, video slide pins and computer components.

As with all Okuno-Auromexelectroless nickel products, the technology for composite deposition are environmental friendly being PFOS and lead-free.
